GPS Terms

Term Definition
# of Satellites Number of satellites used to determine GPS monitoring device location
Fix The GPS device’s geographical location on a map at (a) given point(s) in time
Speed The rate at which the GPS monitoring device is moving
Direction The geographical orientation of the GPS device as it is moving
CSQ Signal Strength Quality – The strength of the signal experienced by the GPS monitoring device – equivalent to the number of “bars” on a cell phone
Point, RMC A single location point from the bracelet
Lat / Long The global latitude and longitude address of a given location point
CTP Cell Tower Point – A location point derived by calculating the GPS device’s proximity to the three closest cellular wireless network towers. Also referred to as “triangulation.” Used when satellite-derived location is unavailable due to unfavorable environmental conditions.

Application Basics

Term Definition
SCRAMNET GPS SCRAM Systems’ monitoring system application
GPS Analytics Reports in the application that consolidates thousands of GPS points into a meaningful calendar of client’s travel and stop patterns.
Alerts A generic term that refers to events that can potentially generate notifications. This term is often used interchangeably with events.
Events A generic term that is used to describe any bracelet-related occurrence that can be displayed in the Event Details pop-up window. Events can be informational, such and plugs and unplugs, or they can represent a critical incident that needs immediate attention.
Messages Refers to the actual data that is sent by a bracelet to the system. Messages include a variety of information including location, battery status, bracelet status, and event information.
Notifications Emails and/or text messages that are sent to recipients when designated events are generated.
Onboard vs. On-Server Zones Onboard zones are stored on the SCRAM GPS device itself. Depending on which model of SCRAM GPS device is being used, there may be limitations to the shape and number of “onboard” zones the device can store for each offender. On-Server zones allow for polygonal zone shapes and an unlimited number of zones.
Violations Violations refer to events where the client has entered or exited a zone when a schedule required them to be either in (inclusion zones) or out (exclusion zones) of the zone. In general, an exclusion zones will default to a 24/7 schedule. Neutral zones automatically generate alerts, but have no schedules and therefore no violations.

SCRAMNET GPS Program Configurations

Term Definition
Users The officers, agents, case managers, and administrators who use the SCRAMNET GPS monitoring system
Admin, Officer, Guest Different access levels for a user
Primary Agent The primary person monitoring the client
Recipient A user or other persons who are set up to receive email or text messages of alerts generated by the client
Accounts The billable caseload for the customer that has clients assigned to it.
Sub-account An caseload below a “parent” account
Account Setting Configuration values for the monitoring program/account. For example, time zone, date format, etc.

Monitoring Settings

Term Definition
Supervision Plan, Rate Plan Determines how frequently the bracelet gathers a GPS point (“Location”), and how frequently the point is transmitted to the server (“Transmission Frequency”). For example, a 1×1 rate plan means a GPS point is gathered every 1 minute, and transmitted to the server every 1 minute.

Zones

Term Definition
Zones Geographical areas defined on a map where the client can and cannot go.
Inclusion Zone An address, on the map, that defines an area where the client is allowed to be. These are generally “home” and “work.” The zones are shown in green on the map.
Exclusion Zone An address, on the map, where the client is not allowed to be. These are generally victim’s home and work. The zones are shown in red on the map.
Neutral Zone A zone used to track when a client enters and exits. This type of zone does not generate a violation
Account Zone A zone defined at the account level and can be applied to one or more clients in the account
Schedule Determines when the client must be in an inclusion zone. For example, must be at home between 7:00 PM and 7:00 AM
24/7 schedule Client is required to be in an inclusion zone 24 hours a day. For example, while on house arrest.
Overnight schedule A schedule that goes overnight. For example, client must be at work between 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM the next day
Grace period The number of minutes a client is allowed to arrive late to an inclusion zone without generating a violation
Drive time The amount of time a client is allowed to drive between two inclusion zones (for example from home to work)
OnServer Zone The zone information is stored on the server. Violations are generated by comparing GPS points from the bracelet to zone and schedule settings
Onboard Zone The zone information is stored on the bracelet
Zone type On the map, zones can be rectangle, circle, polygon. For example, if a client is not allowed to leave the county, the customer would create a polygon inclusion zone around the entire county

Violations

Term Definition
Inclusion Zone Violation, schedule violation Client was not within the zone (such as work or home) during the schedule timeframe.
Exclusion Zone Violation Client entered an exclusion zone
Strap tamper, tamper The integrity of the strap is compromised
Device tamper, tamper The backplate for the bracelet has been compromised, or removed

Environmental Factors

Term Definition
Communication failure, no cellular communication, comm failure The bracelet is unable to communication data over the cellular network
Location failure, no GPS location The bracelet is unable to report its location information

Battery Status

Term Definition
Device is plugged in, unplugged The SCRAM GPS bracelet is attached to the charging cable and plugged into a power outlet, or it is not
Battery charge level The amount of battery power left in the device expressed as a percentage
Fully Charged The device battery is at full capacity
Battery Low The device battery has roughly 20% of its life left and should be charged soon
Battery critical The device battery has only a few hours of battery life left and should be charged immediately

Alerts, Notifications, Messages (sample list)

Term Definition
Inclusion or exclusion zone violation The SCRAM GPS device  – and therefore the client – has exited a location in which the client is required to stay (Inclusion Zone) or has entered a location in which the client is not allowed to be (Exclusion Zone).
Device is plugged in or unplugged The device is attached to the charging cable and plugged into a power outlet, or it is not.
Battery is low or critical The amount of battery power left in the device is low and the device should be charged soon.
Location or communication failures The location of the device cannot be determined (Location Failure) or the device has lost its connection to the SCRAMNET GPS monitoring system (Communication Failure).
Clear Any violation that has since ceased to be a violation. For example, when a client goes into an Exclusion Zone, this is an Exclusion Zone Violation. When the client leaves the Exclusion Zone, there is an “Exclusion Zone Violation Clear” event.

Device Hardware

Term Definition
Device, unit, OMU, bracelet, Locator The GPS ankle bracelet. OMU: Offender Monitoring Unit.
Device, unit, HMU, beacon, base station HBU: Home Base Unit. A base station that “tethers” to the device; usually in the client’s “Home” Inclusion Zone. Typically used when a client lives in a building or other location that is an impaired environment for satellite location point collection.
Strap The band on the GPS bracelet used to wrap around the client’s ankle
Backplate Plastic plate that secures the strap to the bracelet.
Button The button on the bracelet. The client pushes this button when the device sirens or vibrates.
Charger The cable that attaches to the SCRAM GPS device on one end and plugs into an A/C power outlet on the other and is used to charge the internal battery in the device.
Device Name The ID (serial number) of the device.

Operations on The Bracelet

Term Definition
Vibrate The bracelet will automatically vibrate when the its battery is low. Additionally, a user may send a vibrate command from SCRAMNET GPS to the bracelet.
Audible Alarm, Siren A user may send a audible command from SCRAMNET GPS to the bracelet.  Once received the bracelet will produce an audible alarm sound.
Pushed, or did not push the button When bracelet vibrates or produces an audible alert sound, instruct the client to push the button on the bracelet to acknowledge and stop the vibration or audible alarm. This action or lack of action, is recorded on the Client Event pop-up window.

Beacon

Term Definition
Tether The bracelet is currently in proximity to the beacon. The bracelet and beacon are able to communicate via radio frequency (RF).
Untethered The bracelet is outside of the beacon’s RF range and are not able to communicate together
