Recommendation
SCRAM Systems recommends that Program Participants who will be traveling by air while wearing a SCRAM CAM Device carry a printed copy of their SCRAM CAM or SCRAM CAM+HA Program Participant Agreement, along with a printed copy of the following statement, to share with airport security and airline personnel if needed.
Statement
As part of a court-ordered alcoholic consumption abstinence or monitoring program, program participants may be compelled to be fitted with a wearable SCRAM Continuous Alcohol Monitor® (SCRAM CAM®) device (the “Device”), and if they are so compelled by the court, the participant agrees to wear the Device on-ankle, uninterrupted, for the duration of the program.
The SCRAM CAM Device will, at pre-programmed intervals, test the participant for the presence of alcohol by taking a sample of the insensible perspiration that is being emitted as vapor through the participant’s skin. When the Device detects the presence of alcohol, it will record and store a positive alcohol reading until such time that it can transmit the reading to the program monitoring system, where the reading will then be analyzed and reported to the agent managing the participant’s program.
The SCRAM CAM Device conforms with health, safety, environmental protection, radio frequency, and electromagnetic compatibility standards in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. The Device is powered by a non-rechargeable 3-volt lithium CR2 battery. CR2 batteries are commonly used to power digital SLR cameras, as well as a variety of flashlights and other electronic devices.
SCRAM Systems regularly monitors the performance of the SCRAM CAM Device through regular self-diagnostic tests on its internal hardware and software. If a self-diagnostic reveals an issue with the Device or its battery, an alert is generated and reported to the agent managing the participant’s program. The agent is then expected to meet with the participant to replace the battery or exchange the Device for a replacement Device.
Although not yet certified beyond the countries listed above, given the built-in safeguards and factors cited, Alcohol Monitoring Systems, Inc., d.b.a. “SCRAM Systems,” asserts the Device is as safe to bring into the passenger compartment of any commercial airliner as a digital SLR camera or any other admissible portable electronic device.
